Being bullied as a kid is not usually something you might link to debilitating Fibromyalgia or a severely crippling pain syndrome. But, even though trauma, abuse and bullying feature as a common theme behind so much serious and chronic illness, many people do not connect their adult physical pain to any childhood trauma they suffered – unless they also have depression or PTSD.
Thus, for many people who feel they have “dealt with” past trauma and abuse, it comes as quite a cruel shock to learn that witnessing or being in an abusive situation during childhood may be the underlying cause of some serious adult conditions.
National Pain Report Says Abuse is a Cause:
Abuse in this context also constitutes emotional abuse; bullying and witnessing domestic violence – which so many children are sadly exposed to on a daily basis.

“Trauma and sexual abuse unequivocally predicts the development of chronic pain later in life…. the science is indisputable… Nearly 44% of the women surveyed said they experienced emotional abuse, making it the most common childhood trauma….Bullying (35%) was the second most common trauma, followed by sexual abuse (28%), witnessing domestic violence (24%), physical abuse (23%), and death of a parent or close loved one (17%)….”

Why is Breathing Important For Recovery From Trauma?
While Buteyko is not a psychological program, it has an important role to play in recovery from psychological stress.
The word “Psyche” has its roots in the word “Breath”.
This is because emotions, stress and breathing are closely tied.
Any and all Stress elevates breathing and can cause it to become disordered.
When chronic stress is experienced, chronically disordered breathing is often the result. Chronically disordered breathing means less oxygen is reaching your brain. This alone will contribute to anxiety and stress, and may trigger pain.
Many of us do not know that we have a stressed breathing pattern, because we simply have no awareness of how our breathing, emotions and stress are connected and how one can aggravate the other or reduce it.
We simply feel “slightly out of breath”, or that we are “holding” our breath, or find we can’t walk as far as we could. We may struggle to speak a full sentence without gasping, sigh often, get dry mouth and need lots of drinks to be able to speak or move, and wake up feeling groggy and as if our mouth has been carpeted overnight.
While many of us wont notice these issues as “symptoms”, if we did notice them we would simply put them down to “being unfit”, “stress” or “bad diet”. Most of us would not consider these small factors as a sign that something else may be wrong.
Stressed Breathing Makes You Stressed:
Unbalanced breathing can lead to any number of metabolic imbalances that can make the condition worse, while balanced breathing reduces the biochemical stress reactions that may be contributing to anxiety, panic and ultimately – pain.
Overcoming any traumatic experience is a process which should include: correcting nutrition, keeping fit, talk therapies, bodywork therapies…as well as learning self-calming techniques like Buteyko.
Using Buteyko Techniques in acute situations can effectively normalize breathing and reduce stress reactions that may be sabotaging your recovery. Using these techniques as a “Method” or “Daily Practice” can also prevent symptoms recurring.
